Before departure

Croatia is the slowest charter in the Mediterranean, and that is the point. The thousand-island Dalmatian coast moves at the pace of stone and pine: a Venetian campanile in each harbour, an Adriatic light that has nothing to do with the Italian one across the water, water cold enough to wake you up and clear enough to count fish at fifteen metres.

A week between Split and Dubrovnik is a week of unhurried Europe: medieval cities at sunset, empty coves at noon, an oyster farm at lunch, a cellar of fresh-pressed olive oil for the trip home. The famous islands — Hvar, Vis, Korčula — sit close together; the cruising days are short, the swims long.

The route ends at the most photographed walled city of the Adriatic, but the architecture of the week is what happens before it.
